What type of bleaching does the office do?
We offer three types of tooth whitening or bleaching systems:
- The first is a take-home system; it is the least expensive, very user friendly and most popular. The system offers 10 pre-loaded whitening trays and is available in various strengths.
- The second is the custom tray system which is also take- home. We take impressions of your upper and lower arch and fabricate custom whitening trays. This works well for those with crowded teeth those who want the flexibility of being able to try different types and strengths of bleaching agents.
- The third is an in-office system; the whitening is done chair-side and scheduled for one hour, for those patients who are looking for instant results.
Why do we recommend x-rays (bitewings) yearly?
Bitewing check radiographs are updated yearly as part of early diagnosis and interception of disease. During the clinical examination, it is virtually impossible to adequately detect decay or periodontal disease between the teeth without the benefit of radiographs.
What type of toothbrush should I use?
There are a vast variety of toothbrush options available to the consumer today. Toothbrushes have many variables such as head size, shape, and angle. Also, the bristles vary in length, number, configuration, and hardness. It is important that whichever toothbrush you select, it is comfortable in your hand and it allows you to access all the exposed surfaces of your teeth and gums. Dr. Pernokas recommends soft and extra soft bristles to minimize trauma to the hard and soft tissues. The toothbrush should be replaced every 3-4 months, as they age with the use they become less effective at removing debris and the bristles actually become stiffer and more abrasive. Electronic and sonic toothbrushes are recommended (with soft bristles) for anyone who desires to use them and especially for patients with impaired manual dexterity.
