Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants in Seattle, WA

Most of the dental problems that we face could be prevented with proper oral care. Take cavities for instance. Our dental team certainly sees our fair share, and they are most likely to develop on back teeth since it’s a little tougher to clean all those grooves and pits of a molar’s chewing surfaces. The good news is that we can easily protect kids at an early age from these types of cavities by placing a dental sealant.

About Dental Sealants
Sealants are transparent or tooth-colored, medical-grade plastic coatings that go over the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth, or molars. Sealants help reduce the risk for decay by keeping plaque, bacteria, and food particles from getting trapped in all the tooth’s ridges and grooves. Even if your child is a great brusher and flosser, sealants can offer a little added protection for their smiles.

Getting Dental Sealants
Getting sealants is incredibly easy and painless, which we know both our little patients and their parents love to hear! We can even place sealants during your child’s next checkup, so you don’t have to make a special visit to our office. Sealants do not require drilling, needles, or any techniques that may make your little one nervous or anxious. We simply paint the sealant onto the back teeth and then use a special light to harden the sealants directly to the tooth.

The first set of molars typically come in when your child is 6-7 years old. During your child’s routine checkups we can determine when the best time to place sealants will be. Your child’s second set of molars will come in around 11-12 years old. We may also recommend placing sealants on these back teeth once they fully erupt.

Many people don’t realize that kids can develop decay too and that it’s just as important for them to practice good oral hygiene if they want to protect their growing smiles from cavities. By getting dental sealants we can provide their smile with additional protection against decay.
