What are Crowns and Bridges?

Find out more about these dental restorations and how they can bring your smile back to life.

When it comes to restoring your smile it can be difficult to know just what restoration will help the most. From the office of our Cincinnati dental bridgesdentists, find out more about dental crowns and bridges and when they are a good option.

About Crowns

Maybe you know what a dental crown is already even if you haven’t gotten one before. These dental restorations are shaped just like teeth and are designed to fit over a damaged tooth. A tooth that has been cracked, fractured or broken can easily become worse or lost if left untreated. This is why your cosmetic dentist in Cincinnati will recommend getting a dental crown.

While crowns can bring a tooth back to full strength and durability it can also improve its shape. Teeth that have aesthetic issues such as being oddly shaped or severely discolored can also benefit from getting dental crowns especially when the new esthetic ceramic crown materials are used like Emax and Zirconia.

We will take impressions of the damaged tooth from which your customized crown will be made. We will even check the shade of your teeth to create a crown that matches the rest of your smile. While your crown is being made a temporary crown will be placed over your tooth to protect it. Once the permanent crown is ready we will place it over the tooth to check the fit. We will make any necessary adjustments we need to before cementing the crown into place. Once the crown is in place your tooth is considered fully restored.

About Bridges

A missing tooth can feel downright defeating but a dental bridge is a simple solution for replacing one or more missing teeth without needing surgery. Dental bridges can easily be placed in just two dental visits. During the first visit we will prepare the surrounding teeth for dental crowns and take impressions of your teeth. These crowns help to support the dental bridge and keep it firmly in place. Between the two dental crowns is a false tooth that will be used to replace your missing tooth. When a dental bridge is placed it prevents neighboring teeth from shifting toward the empty gap in your smile.

During the second visit we will place the dental crowns and bridge over your two teeth and once it is fitted properly we will cement the bridge into place.
