An Explanation on Malocclusions

Posted August 8, 2017

What is a malocclusion, exactly? It’s a fancy term for a “bad bite,” or a misalignment in your teeth and jaw. Bad bites can be formed by oral accidents, genetics, unhealthy habits, poor oral hygiene, or any combination of these factors. They tend to be rather common. Here’s a list of types of malocclusions:

Malocclusions of the incisors:

-Misplaced midline: when upper and lower incisors don’t align properly.

-Underbite: When lower incisors protrudes past upper incisors; occasionally called “bulldog teeth.”

-Overbite: When upper incisors overhang lower incisors; sometimes referred to as “buck teeth.”

-Open Bite: Any other variation in which upper and lower incisors don’t touch when biting down.

Other forms of malocclusions:

-Crossbite: When the lower jawbone juts out past the upper jawbone.

-Transposition Malocclusion: When teeth show up above the gumline in the wrong places.

-Rotation Malocclusion: When teeth slowly shift out of correct alignment.

-Spacing Malocclusions: When there are asymmetrical gaps, overcrowded teeth, or large gaps between the teeth.
