FAQs

How much do orthodontic treatments cost and how long do they take?

Your smile is unique, and so is your orthodontic treatment. The time and cost for each individual varies depending on the severity of the case and the treatments received. Schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Andolino to understand what treatment options are available to you and their cost. Please also review our New Patient Consultation information to learn more about how to get started with your orthodontic treatment.

Will receiving orthodontic treatment hurt, and can I return to work/school after my appointments?

While orthodontic treatment is made to be as comfortable and gentle as possible, some people are less tolerant to discomfort than others. We can advise on what to expect and also can provide you safe and effective pain relievers should you experience discomfort. You also can visit our Emergency Care page for additional information.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has successfully completed at least two additional academic years of continuous advanced studies in an orthodontic program of a dental school or institution approved by the American Dental association. This advanced training includes such diverse studies as physics, embryology, genetics, human growth and development, cephalometrics, biophysics and mechanical engineering. Only dentists with this advanced education can announce they are orthodontists.

What is Orthodontics?

The term itself comes from two Greek words: “orthos,” which means right or correct and “odon,” which is the Greek word for tooth. Orthodontics is a special kind of dentistry involving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for crooked, crowded or protruding teeth is “malocclusion,” which means “bad bite.” The practice of orthodontics involves the design, application, and control of corrective appliances, commonly called braces, to treat and correct these problems.

Do braces cause you to have more tooth decay?

The truth is that tooth decay is a result of poor dental hygiene, with or without braces. Having braces in the mouth means you must brush and floss more carefully. The issue is not that braces might cause enamel scarring or decay, but whether you take the additional time to clean your teeth properly.

Can you really receive radio signals on your braces?

It makes for a good story in the high school cafeteria, but the truth is, you should carry a transistor radio if you want to listen to your favorite station, not your braces!

Is it possible for braces to lock together if you kiss someone who also wears braces?

Another funny story, but braces are made in such a way that this just can’t happen.
