Braces: Invisible vs Traditional

Posted July 6, 2017.

At Andolino Orthodontics, conveniently located in Midtown, Manhattan, we customize orthodontic treatment options that best fit your needs. As orthodontic care advances, patients have been requesting the use of Invisalign, Lingual (tongue side) or clear braces rather than the traditional metal ones. The question we are now faced with is simply the matter of which one is more effective. The answer may be as subjective as to the needs and tastes of every individual patient. Here are some differences between treatment with traditional braces, lingual braces and Invisalign.

1. Traditional Braces and Lingual braces are irremovable. They consist of brackets and wires that are inserted into the mouth and worn 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Since braces cannot be temporarily removed, there must be proper precautions made regarding the types of foods eaten or any activities or contact sports played that might cause damage. Invisalign is removable and essentially invisible to the human eye. They should be worn at least 20 -22 hours a day and can be taken out during the day to eat and brush your teeth and floss. Being removable makes them convenient, but extra steps must be taken to ensure they stay clean and hygienic.

2. Traditional and Lingual braces are made of metal brackets and wires. They provide stability and effective teeth straightening, however the sides or “wings” of the brackets might cause sores and minor discomfort during the first week or two after starting treatment. Invisalign is made of a strong, medical grade, thermoplastic material that is fitted snugly around the teeth. Invisalign is less uncomfortable than fixed braces and can be removed for meals, but MUST be worn 20-22 hours each day to work properly.

3. Traditional Braces can sometimes be less costly than Invisalign, with lingual braces being slightly more expensive. However, the price of treatment depends on the individual patient. The amount of work needed, the length of the treatment, the plan worked out with Andolino Orthodontics, and the insurance company all factor into the price of the treatment. To learn which appliance would be best for you and how much treatment will cost, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Andolino.

In summary, it all depends on the individual patient. Traditional and lingual braces are relatively easy to clean and may be more effective with certain tooth movements than Invisalign, whereas Invisalign is removable, lighter, and overall more convenient for some individuals. At Andolino Orthodontics, we strive to help you make the best decisions for your smile and will assist you in choosing the right appliance for your needs and concerns.
