Tooth Filling and Crowns

Tooth Filling and Crowns with Kitchener East Family Dental in Kitchener, Ontario

Your smile is often the first thing that other people notice about you, so it is important to have healthy teeth and gums. One of the most common problems people experience with their teeth is cavities, which can quickly ruin the look and health of your teeth. Not only do decayed teeth become discolored, but they can break or crack. The bacteria that seep into cavities may also find its way into your bloodstream, which can put your overall health at risk. The good news, a quick visit to your dentist for a filling and/or a crown can prevent the cavity from worsening while improving your smile.

What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is used to fill in a hole in your teeth that has been caused by a cavity. To prevent the risk of further decay and to provide a smooth, clean area for the composite material, the decayed or damaged tooth material will be removed. Fillings are generally made from a composite resin that looks similar to natural teeth; however, fillings can be made from porcelain, amalgam or gold, depending on the circumstances. Fillings are generally used to restore cavities that have not damaged your entire tooth. In some situations and if the tooth can be saved, a serious cavity may be treated with both a filling and a crown.

What is a Dental Crown?

The primary difference between a crown and a filling is that a crown sits over an existing tooth, while fillings are put inside of the tooth. For minor tooth decay, your dentist will generally recommend a filling; however, for major tooth decay, dental crowns are typically the best solution. Dental crowns, which are also known as caps, are typically made from a porcelain material and will cover the damaged tooth. Crowns used for dentistry procedures are basically used to protect your teeth by providing the structure that a filling alone cannot do. Crowns may also be used to restore the appearance of teeth that are discolored and/or worn. A bridge can provide stability when filling in a gap between teeth. If you are considering implants, a crown is the part of the implant that is designed to look like your natural tooth.

Both fillings and crowns can become damaged if you do not practice good oral hygiene, so extremely important to visit your dentist for routine examinations and cleanings. If you do have cavities, the sooner damages are repaired, the less dentistry work you will need.
