Get Control of Your Acne

When you struggle with acne it might feel like you’re the only one, but it’s actually the most common skin condition in the U.S. Many adults and teens deal with pimples, blackheads, and other blemishes. It can be frustrating trying to deal with acne on your own. A dermatologist can identify the type of acne affecting you and develop a treatment plan to help you get control of your acne. Dr. Yvette Tivoli, the knowledgeable dermatologist at Atlantic Derm in Delray Beach, FL, can help you achieve and maintain clearer skin.

Causes of Acne

The primary cause of acne is clogged pores. The skin naturally produces sebum, which helps moisturize the skin and keep the pores clean. As the skin releases sebum, it moves along the hair follicles in the pores and sweeps away dirt and debris, while also lubricating the skin. However, problems with the normal sebum production process can cause dirt, debris, and sebum to become trapped in the pores and clog them, which results in the development of acne.

Treatments for Acne

Several methods can be used to clear up existing acne and prevent new blemishes from forming. Preventive acne treatments work by killing acne-causing bacteria or reducing oil levels in the skin. Treatments for clearing up existing acne, such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, work by unclogging the pores. Examples of the different acne treatments we offer include:

  • Prescription or over-the-counter creams and ointments
  • Drainage and extraction
  • Chemical peels
  • Laser treatment
  • Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy and corticosteroids can also be used to treat acne in certain cases. Hormone therapy is used when blemishes are the result of hormonal imbalances, while corticosteroids might be an option when trying to reduce inflammation. The right treatment can differ for each patient and depends, in part, on the type, cause, and severity of the acne. The skilled dermatologist at our office in Delray Beach can develop an individualized treatment approach tailored to your needs.
