Eczema

Dermatitis Delray Beach FL
Dermatitis

Eczema, also referred to as dermatitis, is inflamed, irritated skin. It most often results in an itchy, dry, red rash that appears on the face, hands, feet, inside of elbows, and/or backs of the knees

A family history of this skin disorder, the presence of asthma and allergies, and exposure to certain irritants all may increase your risk of developing eczema. It is believed to be an overreaction by the body’s immune system to a particular trigger. Eczema is not contagious.

There are many different types of eczema, including:

  • Atopic Dermatitis: The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis usually begins in childhood and recurs with exposure to certain triggers.
  • Contact Dermatitis: Eczema symptoms occur as a result of direct contact with a particular trigger.
  • Discoid Dermatitis: Symptoms appear in the shape of discs on the skin – especially on the lower legs, forearms, and torso.
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis: Flaking skin is common with this type of eczema and occurs in oily areas of the body such as the scalp, face, and back. Stubborn dandruff is common in people with seborrheic dermatitis.

Scratching worsens eczema and thickens skin in the area, so treatment involves relieving a patient’s symptoms. This may mean avoiding known triggers, as well as moisturizing and protecting the skin. Home care may also include wet wrap therapy, which can help rehydrate the skin to enhance the efforts of topical ointments or creams.
