How A Dermatologists Uses Botox

In recent years, more and more people are turning to Botox as a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that helps diminish wrinkles and other problems including:

  • Frown lines
  • Neck creases
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Lines around the eyes
  • Excessive sweating

The vast majority of wrinkles on the face are caused by facial muscles below the skin. Botox involves making small injections of a pharmaceutical substance into the skin to eliminate or temporarily reduce facial wrinkles. Botox works by blocking the nerve signals that tell the facial muscles to contract which cause wrinkles. At Atlantic Derm in Delray Beach, FL, Dr. Yvette Tivoli is clinically trained in a variety of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures in addition to medical and surgical dermatology.

How Botox Works

Botox is a drug that weakens or paralyzes muscles and is made from botulinum toxin A. When used properly, Botox does not have any risks and works by blocking the nerves that cause muscles to contract, thus softening the appearance of wrinkles. Dr. Tivoli will make an injection in the muscles of the wrinkles that a person is looking to eliminate which will cause the frown lines to be reduced either permanently or temporarily.

What To Expect During Botox

Since botox needles are very small, it is unlikely to cause significant pain to the patient; however, you may notice bruising or small red bumps in the area near the injection site. These should resolve within the first couple days of having the injection. Avoiding ibuprofen, aspirin, and any other over-the-counter medicine not prescribed by a doctor in the days leading up to the botox injection, can lessen the likelihood of bruising. Prepare for your injection by having a light meal with plenty of water. A full stomach will soften any nerves and hydrated skin will respond more effectively to the botox. Following your appointment, you’ll want to avoid touching your face to allow the Botox to settle and do not engage in strenuous activity for the first day.

Whether this is your first time doing botox or you’ve been doing it for years, the friendly and professional team at Atlantic Derm in Delray Beach, FL is ready to assist. Give Dr. Tivoli a call today at 561-802-7546 to learn more about how botox injections can help you.
