What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin condition that makes your face look like you are perpetually blushing. It can also cause acne-like bumps. It can be embarrassing and is frequently mistaken for excessive use of alcohol. While some types of alcohol can cause a reaction, the reality is, that even non-drinkers get rosacea. If the condition goes on for an extended period, it can affect the quality of life.
Symptoms of Rosacea
Flushed Skin
The most recognized symptom of rosacea is the flushed red skin in the center of the face. It is usually located on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin but can extend to other parts of the body including the neck, the head, ears, and chest. You may see spider veins, which are small broken blood vessels. Skin that is sore and stings or burns is possible.
Acne
You may notice that you have dry spots called plaques that are not flat but are raised on the skin. You may also have outbreaks that come and go and are usually located where the skin is the reddest.
Eyes
Some people develop rosacea near their eyes. It can affect your vision and can cause your eyes to feel gritty. You may get broken blood vessels or a cyst on your eyelids. If you get these symptoms, you may need to see an eye doctor for this condition.
Thickened skin
This happens most often on the nose and is what gives some people the bulbous nose appearance.
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, see a dermatologist in Delray Beach, FL.
Causes of Rosacea
The exact cause of rosacea is not known, but scientists are working to figure it out. It does seem to run in some families. It may be an immune system overreaction. It is more common among people of Scandinavian or Celtic heritage, those aged 30-50 and women slightly more than men. But there are exceptions that don't fit into any of these categories.
