Crowns

Over time, our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems. Crowns are used to strengthen weakened teeth. Some common needs for crowns include: teeth with large fillings, teeth that have broken or have excessive wear, and teeth that have been treated with root canal. A crown is also placed over an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure. A crown covers a tooth to restore it back to its normal shape and size.

Zirconia crowns are porcelain crowns derived from the metal Zirconium. Zirconium is a strong metal that is compatible with the human body. These crowns have translucent appearance which allows light to pass through them. This makes them hard to distinguish from a natural tooth. Zirconia crowns are preferred because they are stronger than either types of crowns and are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. No metal margins to show through, Zirconia crowns can be placed anywhere in the mouth.

Before a crown can be made the tooth has to be reshaped by reducing the enamel, so that the crown can be placed over it. You will be given local anesthetic before this part of the procedure so you do not experience any discomfort. Once the tooth has been reshaped, an impression will be taken of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental lab to make your final crown. The correct shade for your tooth will also be determined. A temporary crown will be made to cover the tooth while the final crown is being made. The crown takes approximately two weeks to be returned to the office. At that time, another appointment will be scheduled to seat your final crown.

Crowns are durable. You should care for it just as you would your other teeth. However, the lifespan of your crown does depend on the amount of “wear and tear” on the crown, good oral hygiene, and personal habits.
