Endodontic Treatment
In the past, just hearing the term “root canal” was scary. But with today’s technology, that is a thing of the past! The use of local anesthetics and advancements such as the rotary hand piece have allowed root canal treatment to be similar to a routine filling.
The pulp of the tooth is the center of the tooth which consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The pulp can become infected for different reasons. These can include deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth or broken teeth. Trauma to a tooth can cause nerve damage, even without a noticeable break. Occasionally, infections are diagnosed on x-ray, without a patient even being aware of any problem. Symptoms can include sensitivity to hot/cold food and drinks, biting, or chewing. If this infection is left untreated, it can cause extreme pain or lead to an abscess and ultimately tooth loss.
During root canal treatment, the infected tissue is removed from the tooth. The canal or canals are then cleaned out, filled with a material called gutta percha, then it is sealed with a composite resin. A tooth that has been treated with a root canal has an increased susceptibility to breakage. Because of this, it is highly recommended that the tooth is fitted with a crown. This will keep the tooth protected.
