What are dental sealants made of?

Sealants are thin layers of plastic painted over one or more teeth.

How do dental sealants work?

Our molars have thin fissures and grooves covering their surfaces. These areas act as traps for bacteria, and are also difficult to clean, making them welcome homes for cavities. Sealants cover the problematic surfaces with a thin, protective coat to keep decay from taking its toll.

How are sealants applied?

After the target tooth has been carefully cleaned and dried, an acidic solution will be applied to its surface. This etches the tooth slightly, creating a rough texture to which the sealant will better adhere. Then, the sealant will be painted on and hardened with a curing light. The process is quick and comfortable.

Who needs sealants?

Sealants are especially valuable for children, because they protect teeth during an age when brushing and flossing aren't top priorities. They will also help prevent your kids from needing to have cavities filled, which can be the cause of negative dental associations. We want kids to grow up loving the dentist, and keeping their teeth cavity-free helps accomplish that.
