Patient FAQ

Do I need a referral from my Primary Care Physician (PCP) to see a psychologist?

Not typically, however each insurance plan is different, and we will work with you to check with your specific plan.

How do I make an appointment?

First appointments are scheduled by our office staff. You may call our main number at (401) 785-0040.  Our office staff will ask you for basic demographic and insurance information. You will be connected with the appropriate clinician and your first meeting will be scheduled. The intake manager will also check your insurance benefits to find out if you have a co-pay or a deductible.

How far in advance do I need to book an appointment?

Generally, new clients are offered an appointment within 5 days. The quickest way to make an appointment is by calling our office between 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM, Monday to Friday or Saturday 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Or please leave a message on our confidential voicemail and our staff will return your call as soon as possible.

How much time is allotted for each appointment?

All appointments are scheduled for approximately 45 minutes, leaving the remainder of the hour for clinicians to complete necessary documentation.  For initial appointments clients are asked to come in 20 minutes ahead of schedule to complete the necessary intake information.

Should I bring anything with me to the first appointment?

Yes, please bring a copy of your insurance card and your photo identification. Prior to your first visit, our office staff will send you an email with information that will connect you to your confidential “patient portal” and you will be asked to complete forms that will help expedite the intake process. This allows your therapist an opportunity to review your information prior to your first session and minimizes the need to spend time gathering information during your first visit. Your therapist will then have more time to make this session comfortable and productive.  If you prefer, however, you can complete all paperwork at your first visit.

What can I expect at the first meeting?

Your first meeting (or intake appointment) will consist primarily of information gathering about the concerns that led you to schedule the appointment. Typical information that is gathered will be current symptoms, past symptoms, previous treatments, medical history, family history, social history, and a review of any previous evaluations or other documentation. Based on the information that is gathered with the clinician conducting your intake appointment, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan.

What is the cost and is it covered by insurance?

The cost of the appointments vary considerably depending on which service is provided and which clinician you will be seeing. Most therapy and evaluations are covered by insurance, but there is a lot of variability with different insurance plans. Our staff will work with you to be sure that you are informed of all out of pocket costs before your first visit.

What insurances do you accept?

Our practice participates with the following insurance programs:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • United Healthcare
  • Tufts Health Plan - commercial plans

If we do not participate with your insurance and your plan allows out of network benefits, our office staff will assist you with the necessary paperwork so you can receive reimbursement directly from your insurance company.

If you do not see your insurance listed above, please call the office to speak with one of our knowledgeable staff members about your individual coverage.

What types of payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, check, or charge (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express). Payments are expected at the time of the appointment.

What if I cannot afford to pay for the service I need?

If you are unable to afford our services we will make every effort to connect you with other qualified mental health professionals in the area.

What types of treatments do you offer?

Our practice offers highly individualized psychological counseling services to address various emotional issues, daily stressors, and life goals for children and adults, including:

  • ADHD and testing services
  • Individual counseling
  • Family counseling
  • Marriage and couples counseling  - including Gottman-trained services

  • Assessment and consultation

Based on your unique needs, your therapist will identify the best treatment approach

See our services section for more information.

Do we provide couples and marriage counseling?

Yes, we do provide couples and marriage counseling.  Initial appointments must be organized for both parties to attend together.  We then see individuals within the couple separately and then come back together to provide feedback regarding the results of our assessment.

Relationships can be challenging and, during difficult times, many couples seek therapeutic intervention to provide guidance, communication skills, and mediation that help strengthen relational ties. Rather than refereeing conflicts or “fixing” partners, our Gottman-trained staff leverages 40 years of compelling research with over 3,000 couples to effectively guide couples across the chasm that divides them.

With effective strategies to resolve their struggles, couples will have the foundation to reconnect and strengthen their relationships.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. We do not currently have a prescriber on staff. However we will work with you to consult with your psychiatrist or psychiatric prescriber to ensure a continuum of care.
