What Dental Crowns Can Do For You

Because they have such a diverse range of applications, crowns are one of the most widely used restorative dental treatments. Among other functions, they can: • Reinforce a weakened tooth • Cover a large filling • Conceal cracks and chips • Enhance an irregularly shaped tooth • Obscure severe discoloration and other cosmetic flaws • Fortify a tooth after a root canal procedure • Top a dental implant to restore a missing tooth If you have suffered dental damage, Dr. Jeffus will provide a complete examination to determine whether a crown is the right way to repair or enhance your smile.

Creating Your Treatment Plan

After he decides that you are a good candidate for a crown, Dr. Jeffus will take pictures of your teeth using our advanced intraoral cameras. These tools will give a detailed view of your individual teeth, so that he can create the optimal treatment plan for your needs. He can also display the images on an exam room computer to keep you fully informed about your care.

Crown Fabrication

To prepare for the actual crowning procedure, Dr. Jeffus will numb your tooth and surrounding area. Then he will carefully trim away some of your dental structure to make room for the crown and ensure it fits snugly. He will take impressions and additional pictures, and he will send this information to our partner lab. In about two weeks, ceramists will produce a customized crown that will be nearly indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Dr. Jeffus typically recommends all-porcelain restorations. Porcelain comes in a range of shades, so you will receive a crown that is the same color as your surrounding teeth. For molars, he often uses zirconia. Zirconia is extremely strong and durable, and it looks very natural. If you need a crown on a front tooth, he will usually recommend IPS e.max® porcelain. This material is considered the gold standard in restorative materials, and it offers an incredibly lifelike sheen.

Crown Placement and Recovery

When your crown is finished, Dr. Jeffus will make sure that the restoration fits properly and does not alter your bite alignment. If no adjustments are needed, he will permanently attach the crown using dental cement. Crowns and the placement procedure have very few side effects. You may experience some minor sensitivity. However, this usually goes away within a few days, and you will enjoy fully restored function and a beautiful smile. Crowns can be cared for just like your natural teeth, and with proper care, can last for years.
