Circumcisions

Circumcisions in the Hillcrest Area of San Diego, CA

If you have been told that you’re having a boy, one of the first decisions parents may need to consider shortly after birth is whether or not to have their newborn circumcised. Circumcision is a simple procedure that removes the foreskin covering the head of the penis.

The most important information you need to know is that there is no medical reason that requires your son to have a routine circumcision.

Of course, circumcision is also a personal choice that we believe every parent needs to make.

What are the benefits of circumcision?

Some people may choose to have their babies circumcised for religious or cultural reasons. However there is:

  • A reduced risk of transmitting sexually transmitted diseases
  • A reduced risk of a urinary tract infection and infection of the foreskin
  • A reduced risk of penile cancer

That being said, the American Academy of Pediatrics and researchers state that the frequency of these problems, even combined, statistically does not warrant recommending circumcision routinely.

Should I wait?

Some parents choose to let their sons grow up and decide for themselves whether or not they want to get circumcised. While this is a viable choice, most pediatricians will tell you it is often handled better by newborns than by older children, teens or adults. The procedure in an infant is quick whereas anesthesia is often required for toddlers and older children.

Circumcision is often covered by insurance, but only for newborns. If you decide to wait, your health insurance may not cover the cost of the procedure, since it is considered an elective procedure.
