Treating an Ingrown Toenail

Dealing with an ingrown toenail? Find out how to manage the discomfort.ingrown toenail

Most people at some point during their lifetime will deal with an ingrown toenail. While the problem is rarely serious it can certainly be painful. Our Kalispell, MT, podiatrist Dr. Esther Barnes is here to tell you more about ingrown toenails and what you can do to manage your symptoms.

While an ingrown toenail isn’t considered a serious problem for a healthy individual, the most important thing is to manage your symptoms until the problem resolves itself. Here are some ways to ease ingrown toenail discomfort:

  • Wear proper footwear that doesn’t put pressure on your toes
  • Prevent an infection from brewing by applying an antibiotic cream to the infected toenail
  • Place a piece of cotton under the toenail to pull it away from the edge of the skin
  • Soak feet in warm water for 15 minutes several times a day

When should I see a doctor?

It’s important to know when you can treat a problem from the comfort of your own home and when you need to consult our Kalispell, MT, podiatric physician. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, if you have nerve damage in your feet or if you have a compromised immune system then even small problems like an ingrown toenail need to be treated right away by a foot care professional. Don’t try to treat the problem on your own, as this could lead to more serious complications.

Of course, even if you are healthy you may require professional treatment if you notice that the ingrown toenail has become swollen, red, and warm to the touch, or if pus is draining from the area. These are all signs of an infection. If you have a severe ingrown toenail or if your ingrown toenail isn’t responding to at-home care then you should also give us a call. In rare cases, minor surgery may be required to remove a portion or the entire toenail.
