Contraception Methods & Options

At Advanced Women's Healthcare, serving Bloomington, IL, we recognize the importance of birth control and understand that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. We realize that some women want to prevent pregnancy while others need it to regulate menstrual cycles or manage certain issues. That's why Dr. Dele Ogunleye, Dr. Lisa Emm, and Dr. Angela Baja work with women to provide them with contraception that works for them. Here are some options:

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An IUD is a small, implantable device used for contraception. You may choose between a hormonal or non-hormonal IUD. With the hormonal IUD, you receive a continuous dosage of progesterone. As a result, your body doesn't ovulate, so there isn't an egg for the sperm to fertilize.

On the other hand, a non-hormonal IUD consists of copper. With this method, the sperm can't move well, which means it can't fertilize an egg. A copper IUD also triggers uterine inflammation that interferes and makes it more difficult for an egg to implant.

Depending on the variety, an IUD can prevent pregnancy for years or until you have it removed.

Birth Control Pills

At our practice in Bloomington, IL, you may receive a prescription for birth control pills. All birth control pills have some hormone, whether progestin and estrogen or progestin-only. The hormones interfere with ovulation. Progestin pills change cervical mucus and make it more difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. Additionally, this hormone will thin the uterine lining to prevent implantation.

Birth control pills can be stopped at any time if you'd like to get pregnant. Often, one of our practitioners will prescribe a birth control pill to regulate your menstrual cycle and manage certain conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Implant

A birth control implant is a device, about the size of a matchstick, that a practitioner will place in your arm. The implant releases progestin to thin your uterine lining and thicken your cervical mucus. This is a long-term option and will last for three years before you need to have it replaced. It can be removed at any time if you would like to conceive.

Vaginal Ring

A contraceptive ring is a device that you place inside your vagina that releases estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancy. Each ring lasts for three weeks. After this time, you'll need to replace the ring.

At Advanced Women's Healthcare, serving Bloomington, IL, and the nearby region, Dr. Ogunleye, Dr. Emm, and Dr. Baja all may prescribe you birth control. We'll work with you to help you find the solution that's most suited for your needs and health.
