Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain may feel like a sharp pain, a nagging ache, or more like pressure than pain. When it persists, it’s your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t right in your reproductive, urinary, digestive tracts or musculoskeletal system. It can be intermittent, constant or associated with certain activities like intercourse.
Many gynecologic conditions can cause pelvic pain. Some of the most common include endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ovarian cysts. The pelvic floor muscles can also be a primary or secondary cause of pelvic pain. Physical therapy can be effective in managing pelvic floor pain and symptoms. How is endometriosis treated?
Your doctor at Advanced Women’s Healthcare recommends customized treatment based on the severity of your symptoms, the extent of your endometriosis, and your plans for getting pregnant now or in the future.
Several hormone-based medications are available to treat endometriosis, including Lupron Depot®, that reduces your pain and shrinks patches of endometriosis. Other hormonal medicines can stop your period or make them lighter and help slow the growth of endometriosis.
The only way to remove the existing patches of endometriosis is with minimally invasive surgery. The team at Advanced Women’s Healthcare are experts in performing minimally invasive surgery using the da Vinci® surgery system. If your pain is severe and you’re sure you don’t want to have more children, hysterectomy may be an option.
Physical therapy can effectively manage pain associated with endometriosis. Inflammation, scar tissue and adhesion formation from this condition can cause pain in the abdominal and pelvic regions. Tightness in the muscles and connective tissue of the lumbopelvic area can cause secondary issues such as back pain, sacroiliac dysfunction, pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary urgency and sexual dysfunction/pain.
