Dr. Carolyn Roy-Bornstein
Dr. Carolyn Roy-Bornstein was a nurse for almost ten years before becoming a doctor. She graduated from Quinsigamond Community College in 1982 with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She worked in the labor and delivery, post-partum and newborn nursery departments of Mary Lane Hospital, then the burn unit of Worcester City Hospital and the pediatric intensive care unit of St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester before deciding to pursue a medical degree. She graduated from Clark University in 1987 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and went on to receive her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1991. She did her internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She worked at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center for twelve years before leaving to establish Merrimack Valley Child and Adolescent Health here in Haverhill.
Dr. Bornstein loves to write. In 2012 she published the memoir Crash: A Mother, A Son, and the Journey from Grief to Gratitude. In 2014 she co-authored the Chicken Soup for the Soul book Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries: 101 Stories of Hope, Healing, and Hard Work with Amy Newmark. Her essays and other non-fiction have appeared in the or are forthcoming in the New York Times , the Boston Globe, Poets & Writers, The Writer , the Journal of the American Medical Association and many other venues. Her flash fiction won third place in the 2004 Writer’s Digest Short Short Story competition. Her newest book Last Stop on the Struggle Bus: A Memoir of Love will hopefully be published soon. In her spare time she runs, swims, bikes and competes in (and sometimes even wins!) triathlons. She has been married to her wonderful husband Saul for over forty years. They have two grown sons and two foster daughters.
