Shaving, plucking and waxing aren't the only ways to deal with unwanted hair. Laser hair removal gets rid of hairs painlessly and offers laser hair removallong-term results. Our Wilmington, DE, dermatologist, Dr. Michael Saruk of Delaware Valley Dermatology Group, LLC, discusses the laser hair removal process.

How does laser hair removal work?

Pigments in your hair give it its color. Short bursts of laser light heat the pigment, which damages your hair follicles and prevents hair from growing. Because laser light precisely targets the hairs, it doesn't damage your skin. Laser treatments often permanently prevent hair from growing, although some regrowth may occur. Regrowth can be easily managed with follow-up treatments in our office.

Is laser hair removal treatment painful?

If you don't like the pain of plucking or waxing, laser hair removal may be a good option for you. Although you'll probably experience a slight stinging sensation as the light penetrates the hair pigments, most people don't consider treatments to be painful. Before your treatment begins, you'll be given a pair of goggles, and a cooling gel will be applied to protect your skin and increase your comfort. Your skin may look a little red after your hair removal session, but that sunburned appearance will only last a day or two. Cold compresses can help decrease redness and warmth.

How many sessions will I need?

Three to seven sessions are generally needed to remove all of the hair from a particular part of your body. The length of time you'll spend in our Wilmington office depends on the amount of hair to be removed. Larger, hairier areas will require longer appointments. You'll need to avoid plucking or waxing your hairs for at least six weeks before your treatment session.

Results won't be immediately noticeable, as it usually takes a few weeks for your hair to fall out after treatment. Once it's gone, new hairs won't replace it.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

  • The upper lip
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Forearms
  • Legs
  • Bikini line
  • Face
