Should sunscreens be applied on top of, or under, other skincare?
This is a question we frequently get and the answer is, "it depends". It depends on whether the sunscreen's active ingredient is chemical, such as avobenzone, or mineral, i.e., titanium dioxide and zinc. Here's what you need to know: Chemical sunscreens need to bind to the skin and should be applied under most other preparations and cosmetics. Mineral-based sunscreens are physical light blockers and are often the last to be applied, but don't have to be. Often, people use a chemical sunscreen in their moisturizer, applied right after cleansing and end with a mineral sunscreen in their makeup primer or in the makeup itself (a good example of this is the Jane Iredale line of powder foundations). Whatever your preference, be sure that your sunscreen use includes the ears, front and back of the neck, and decollete. Hope this helps. Any questions?
