Study Finds Botulinum Toxin Injections May Have Antidepressant Effect.

Medscape (3/27, Kling) reports that according to research presented March 22 at the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual meeting, “botulinum toxin A, commonly known as Botox, has an antidepressive effect when injected between the eyebrows that continues beyond the cosmetic effects of the injection.” Researchers arrived at this conclusion after conducting a “24-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study” in which “30 participants with depressive symptoms were randomized to receive botulinum injections into the glabellar region or placebo.” Notably, while the anti-wrinkling effect of the injections wore off between weeks 12 and 16, the antidepressant effect continued for the entire 24 weeks.
