What is a Lisp?

A lisp is a speech disorder which causes some individuals to be unable to produce the right sounds of some words and/ or letters.
You’ve heard some people speak and have asked them to repeat themselves, or have asked them to enunciate what they’re trying to say better.

Lisping is normal in children. Younger kids eventually learn to speak normally and overcome their lisping as they grow up to 5 years old. They cannot enunciate their words properly, yet the lisps are eliminated by 5 years old. Thereafter, lisps are no longer normal and the child will have a hard time communicating clearly with other people as he or she ages. If the lisp is still present beyond age 5, the help of the dentist or speech therapist is recommended.

Having this speech problem can be troublesome and embarrassing. With a lisp, you have a challenge in communicating with others effectively . Luckily, our Dentist can correct a lisp in less than 30 minutes, and in 1 dental visit.

These 4 types of Lisping can easily be fixed (remedied) by our Dentist:

  • Lateral. This produces a wet-sounding lisp due to airflow around the tongue.
  • Dentalized. This occurs from the tongue pushing against front teeth.
  • Interdental or “frontal.” This causes difficulty making “s”and “z”sounds, due to the tongue pushing between spaces in front teeth, which is common in young children who have lost their two front teeth.
  • Palatal. This also causes difficulty making “s”sounds but is caused by the tongue touching the roof of the mouth.

Do you #lisp?

Do you have an #accent or is it a #tongue tied problem?

Do you have to speak slower to pronunciate your words properly?

We can fix that in less than 15 minutes.
