Understanding the Role of a Pediatrician in School and Daycare Physicals

Your pediatrician is a critical part of your child’s healthcare team, especially when your child needs a physical to attend daycare or school. The pediatricians at Growing Together Pediatrics offer comprehensive medical care for children, including school and daycare physicals. We have two convenient office locations in Orlando, and Ocoee, FL.

How School and Daycare Physicals Help Your Child

Your pediatrician is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood illnesses and medical conditions. Routine school and daycare physicals provided by a pediatrician can help identify, prevent, and treat acute and chronic diseases including allergies, asthma, and infections.

A school or daycare physical is thorough. During your child’s school or daycare physical, your pediatrician will:

  • Perform a comprehensive physical examination
  • Check your child’s respiration, eyes, nose, throat, and ears
  • Perform a vision and hearing screening
  • Record your child’s height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature

Your Orlando and Ocoee, FL, pediatrician also knows the value of childhood immunizations and will ensure your child is current on required immunizations to enter school or daycare. You will also be provided with the necessary documentation.

According to the Centers for Disease Control or CDC, required immunizations from birth to age 18 are:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
  • Haemophilus influenza type B
  • Polio
  • Pneumococcal conjugate
  • Rotavirus
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Chickenpox
  • Hepatitis A
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Meningococcal conjugate
  • Flu
  • Covid

A sports physical is another type of physical provided by a pediatrician. It is required for your child to play a sport. The sports physical is similar to a school physical, but it has some additional steps, including:

  • Checking your child’s balance
  • Assessing your child’s reflexes
  • Evaluating your child’s muscle strength and flexibility
