Orofacial Pain

A Dentist Treats Headaches?

Very few dentists in the United States have the training that Dr. Hirschinger has. He completed a two year orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine residency at UCLA, which focuses on treating patients with chronic head and neck pain including headaches such as migraines, cluster, tension-type headaches, and all other primary headaches. A primary headache is a headache is not being caused by something else such as a brain tumor, a stroke, a systemic disease, etc. Dr. Hirschinger's training included time spent at the UCLA Medical Center with neurologists who had completed their residences and were specializing in treating patients with headaches.

What is Neuropathic Pain?

Neuropathic pain is a fancy way that doctors refer to nerve pain. The unique training that Dr. Hirschinger has allows him to identify the type of chronic pain the patient is having. Many patients that Dr. Hirschinger sees have been to several doctors including dentists, dental specialists, neurologists, ENT's, etc. Many of them come into his Beverly Hills office without having had a real diagnosis of what is causing their pain. Dr. Hirschinger likes to say he only treats "invisible pain," meaning that a visual exam will not provide any clue as to why the patient is having pain. Some of the unique nerve pains Dr. Hirschinger treats are trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and nervus intermedius neuralgia, as well as various type of neuropathies.
