A Closer Look at Treatment Benefits

Dental implants are small titanium posts inserted into the jawbone to support permanent restorations. When compared to traditional dentures, implant-supported restorations offer several unique advantages. Since they are secured by artificial tooth roots, rather than adhesives or metal clasps, implant-supported dentures will not move or slip out of position. This means that patients with implant-supported dentures will not face any diet restrictions. Implant-supported dentures are also more durable than traditional types, which must be relined every few years. Finally, implant-supported dentures also provide benefits to your oral health by returning stimulation to the jaw, which helps to halt the bone deterioration that occurs after tooth loss.

Candidates for Implant-supported Dentures

With implant-supported dentures, you can enjoy a smile with renewed strength and aesthetic appeal. Good candidates for implant-supported dentures are those who:

  • Are missing most or all of their teeth: You may still be eligible for implant-supported dentures even if decay or damage requires a large number of teeth to be extracted.
  • Have adequate jawbone tissue to secure the implants: If you do not have sufficient jawbone density, a bone graft or sinus lift procedure can often be used to improve your candidacy.
  • Are in good overall health: Dr. Brafman will need to treat any present tooth decay or gum disease before placing implants.

Dr. Brafman can determine if you qualify for an implant-supported denture by assessing your oral health, reviewing your dental records, and discussing your concerns and goals during a personal consultation.

Receiving Implant-supported Dentures

To receive dental implants, patients will undergo surgery with a skilled periodontist who has extensive experience performing these types of procedures. During implant surgery, the doctor will create a small incision to access your jaw before strategically placing two or more dental implants at an angle. Patients with limited jawbone density may qualify for All-on-4® implants, which uses just four posts to secure a complete denture.

During the several months following surgery, the embedded posts will integrate with the jawbone to form an incredibly stable base for your restoration. We can provide a temporary denture for you to wear while healing takes place. Your permanent denture will also be created at our trusted partner lab during this time. Once the posts have healed and fused with the jaw, you will return to our office to have your complete or partial implant-supported denture secured firmly in place.
