What is Rosacea?
Rosacea appears as a bright red rash that covers your face. It can form on your nose, cheeks, and forehead and can resemble acne, with small blemishes. Rosacea may be caused by abnormalities of the blood vessels of the face.
Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea
In addition to the most obvious sign of a red rash, your skin can feel hot and painful. Chronic redness may develop on the center of your face, with the skin on your nose beginning to look thickened and enlarged. You may also have swollen bumps which contain pus. Dry, irritated eyes are also a symptom of rosacea.
Risk Factors for Rosacea
There are several factors which can increase your risk of rosacea including if you are a woman, have fair skin, are over 30 years old, smoke, and have a family history of rosacea.
Rosacea Triggers
There are several factors which can trigger a rosacea outbreak including:
- Eating spicy, hot foods
- Drinking hot beverages
- Drinking alcohol
- Excessive exposure to sunlight
- Excessive exposure to wind
- Increased activity and exercise
