ADHD Evaluations and Treatment

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common behavioral disorders in children and the number of children being diagnosed with ADHD is increasing. It’s important that if your child is displaying symptoms of ADHD that you have a pediatrician that you can turn to for a proper evaluation. The sooner your doctor makes a diagnosis the sooner we can create a treatment plan that will help your child manage their behaviors and improve their social, academic and personal lives.

ADHD and Treatment Options

While most people think of medication when they think about treating ADHD, medication is only a piece of the puzzle. It’s true that medication can reduce fidgeting and restlessness and make it easier for a child or teen to focus; however, medication isn’t right for everyone. The most common ADHD medications are Ritalin and Adderall and our pediatrician would be happy to discuss whether medication is the right option for treating your child’s ADHD.

Of course, medication won’t be the only way to curb your child’s behaviors and improve their performance in school. Many times we will also recommend a behavioral therapist or a psychologist. It’s also important to work with school counselors and your child’s teachers to help them better cope with their condition and to overcome certain challenges that they may be experiencing at school. It’s important to work together with your child’s teachers and counselors to ensure that your child’s is getting attentive and effective care and treatment. Plan meetings with your child’s teachers to create short and long-term goals together.

Along with certain therapies and medication, lifestyle changes can also greatly improve a child’s ADHD symptoms. These changes include,

  • Getting a good night’s sleep
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Creating a reward system for good behaviors

Diagnosing ADHD

If your child is displaying some of the symptoms of ADHD it’s a good idea to talk with our pediatrician to find out if they should undergo an evaluation. There is no specific test associated with diagnosing ADHD. Your child will need to display most of the symptoms of ADHD on a regular basis for more than six months in more than one setting (e.g. home, school). We may also need to get assessments from caregivers, teachers and other health care providers about your child’s behaviors. The sooner ADHD is diagnosed the better.
