Bonding

We use modern materials such as composite (synthetic resin) that match the shade, translucency and texture of your teeth to give them a beautiful natural look.

Bonding is an economical alternative to veneers, and it is the material of choice when it comes to small defects.  When the defect or end result requires covering the entire front of the tooth, a veneer or a crown will probably provide superior esthetic result.  Bonding can be used as a restorative procedure:

  • To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To close spaces between teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • To repair spotted or defected teeth
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
  • To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gum recedes

How does it work?

The tooth is prepared for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a composite resin is applied and sculpted into the desired shape by the dentist. Once set, the resin is trimmed, smoothed and polished to a natural appearance.

Considerations:

The bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit, and can improve the appearance of a tooth significantly. However, since the composite resin used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip or break than natural teeth. Bonding typically lasts three to five years before need of repair. However with all the new advanced materials and techniques we continuously incorporate in our office, the strength and longevity have improved scientifically.

You can help maintain your bonding by following these tips:

  • Avoid acids (such as vinegar, tomatoes, or pineapples) and alcohol which can damage the resins.
  • Avoid items that can stain bonding material such as cigarettes, coffee, tea, and berries.
  • Do not put excess pressure on resins. Chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy can cause damage
