Dental Pain Management Protocol

If you have any problems with your kidneys, liver, stomach or have a history of asthma, heart attack, stroke or are on blood thinners, please consult the Drs. Golshani or your primary care physician prior to taking any new medications.

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) is primarily dispensed as 200 mg tablets or capsules.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is primary dispensed as 325mg tablets or capsules. Extra strength Tylenol is 500 mg. Please take caution to adjust accordingly.

For a healthy adult, the maximum 24-hour dose of Ibuprofen is 3200mg. For a healthy adult, the maximum 24-hour dose of Acetaminophen is 3000mg.

For pain:

Take 400 mg Ibuprofen (2x200mg) and 1000 mg Acetaminophen (2x500 mg) together with food/snack. From there:

Every 3-4 hours: Take 400 mg Ibuprofen (2x200mg) as needed

Every 8 hours: Take 1000 mg Acetaminophen (2x500mg) as needed

As with any pain medication, the lowest effective dose should be taken. It is best to avoid pain medication on an empty stomach. Once pain is controlled, medications should be reduced or discontinued. This pain management regimen is intended for the control of acute (short term) pain and is not intended to be a long-term solution. As always, if you are unsure, please don’t hesitate to contact us or your primary care physician.
