Embolization Procedures and What You Need To Know

Just a few weeks ago, the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, underwent a successful kidney embolization procedure which had many people browsing the web to learn more about. Here at PA Vascular Institute, we are more than just the number one choice for Philadelphia residents seeking treatment for vascular problems in their legs, we are also a provider of embolization procedures ourselves.

In light of Mrs. Trump’s recent embolization, we thought we’d take some time to shed light on the different types of procedures we perform and how they help our patients get back to a more comfortable, healthier, life. Continue reading below to learn if you can benefit from the procedures we offer.

Embolization is a type of procedure our doctors are able to perform which blocks the blood vessels and cuts off blood flow to a tumor, aneurysm, or growth through a tiny incision. We are currently taking appointments for patients who are interested in uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) procedures and prostate artery embolization procedures. But, what exactly do these procedures entail? We’re glad you asked.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) Treatment

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical, minimally-invasive procedure we conduct that treats fibroid tumors of the uterus. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow on the walls of the uterus and can cause problems such as anemia, and even make certain women feel more tired than usual. Some of the symptoms of fibroids you should look out for include:

  • Long menstrual period
  • Cramping
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Leg pain or back pain
  • Reproductive difficulties
  • And many others

During the embolization treatment, the fibroids in the uterus become deprived of oxygenated blood, and therefore they shrink. As they shrink, you’ll feel the relief of no longer having to deal with painful symptoms of fibroids.

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) Treatment

Reports claim that nearly half of all men age 51 to 60, and more than 90% of men over 80 are affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Luckily, there is relief available at our vascular institute. If you are unsure if you suffer from BPH, symptoms can range from constant and painful urination, a weak urinary stream, or a sudden urge to urinate among others.

This minimally-invasive treatment only involves a small incision, and patients are able to enjoy quicker recovery times and improved systems in just a couple weeks.
