School Phobia and Anxiety

Child and Family Psychology in Franklin Square, NY, see many school phobia/anxiety issues for children of all ages. It is not a safe assumption for you to declare that your child is falling apart because they don't want to go to school and would rather stay home. A true diagnosis is genuine and agonizing for the child.

While children may try this at least once in their lives, others fear leaving the safe sanctuary of their bedroom/home, and it becomes a real problem for the child and parent.

Scholionophobia: overwhelming fear of school

While this is not a diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying anxiety disorder. This fear goes beyond a phobia because these kids become acutely ill at the first thought of going to school. This fear,

  • Remains with the child for years
  • Causes insecurity
  • Creates intense anxiety
  • Misses school for unknown reasons
  • May have a parent or guardian who is overprotective
  • Common from 5-6, 10-11, and upon entering high school
  • Fear of violence
  • Financial/Food problems
  • Homelessness
  • Lack of parental attention
  • Significant family changes
  • Peer pressure
  • Criticism
  • Dyslexia/Dyscalculia
  • Worry about catastrophic events

Symptoms

Diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting, stomachaches, shaking/tremors, fear of parent separation, fear of the dark, nightmares, obsession towards safety, and tantrums

Every treatment plan is individualized and unique. However, we may incorporate talk therapy, behavior therapy, exposure therapy, and medication. It requires the proper treatment to overcome the fear of going to school. In some cases, this fear never goes away. The child is taught coping skills such as,

  • Meditation techniques
  • Breathing exercises
  • Affirmations
