What is Neurofeedback?

If you've grown tired of searching for a medication that effectively assists you when managing anxiety, depression, ADHD, insomnia, and more, then neurofeedback therapy may be a treatment that interests you. Dr. Renee Clauselle with Child & Family Psychology in Franklin Square, NY, encourages you to read on to learn more about neurofeedback.

A Non-Medicinal Treatment

Neurofeedback, or electroencephalogram (EEG), is a non-invasive, computerized method that evaluates your brainwaves and provides feedback on how your brain functions.

Although relatively new, this form of therapy is utilized to assist patients when regulating how the brain responds to negative triggers. Throughout the treatment process, you are learning to redirect your brain to a relaxed state of mind, as a result of visual, auditory, or video stimuli.

How Neurofeedback Works

Depending on the patient, the treatment process may vary, however, the main goal of the non-invasive therapy is to consciously influence your brainwaves.

Two types of brainwaves that are often measured are alpha and beta waves. Alpha waves often indicate relaxation, calmness, sharpness, or reflection, whereas beta waves are typically identified as your focus, alertness, excitement, or stress

To accomplish successful neurofeedback, Dr. Clauselle in Franklin Square, NY, may have you engage in a form of media to measure your beta waves. This may be signaled by a brightening screen when you present one of the characteristics from above, or the screen will dim if you are attempting to prevent the beta waves. This treatment exercise aims to encourage the response to producing your own brainwaves with the visual recognition of the brightening screen.

Because there is no predetermined exercise that will provide absolute responsiveness when trying to control your own brainwaves, the duration of sessions cannot be determined until steady improvements are made.
