We have answers, here at Downers Grove Pediatrics.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is often diagnosed in school-age children. This condition alters both neurological development and activity, affecting a child or teen’s ability to concentrate, stay focused, and practice self-control.

Will my child grow out of it?

Our Bolingbrook ADHD specialists will admit that ADHD symptoms and behaviors may change as your child gets older; however, this is considered a chronic condition that your child will have all their life. We can work with them to help them manage their symptoms effectively.

What are the signs and symptoms of ADHD?

The number one question from most parents is, “Does my child have ADHD?” As we said, it isn’t always that easy to tell. These are some of the most common warning signs and symptoms of ADHD:

  • Constant fidgeting and trouble sitting still
  • Often caught daydreaming
  • Doesn’t listen to instructions
  • Jumps from one thing to the next without completing anything
  • Frequently losing or misplacing items
  • Making careless mistakes on homework
  • Disorganized
  • Difficulty playing quietly
  • Issues with patience and waiting their turn
  • Temper tantrums or outbursts

For it to be true ADHD, children have to display several of these symptoms across all environments (e.g. school; home; social). These symptoms also have to be negatively impacting your child’s life.

Should I have my child tested?

If your child is displaying these symptoms and has been for several months, then it may provide you with peace of mind to have your child tested. If you are on the fence, you can also discuss this with your pediatrician when you bring your child in for their regular wellness checkup. If we notice any behaviors and habits that could be indicative of ADHD, then we may recommend further evaluation.

How is ADHD managed in children?

Every child’s treatment plan will be a bit different based on the type and severity of their symptoms; however, treatment plans may include:

  • Medication (e.g. Ritalin)
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Special educational services
  • Support groups
  • Dietary changes
  • Increased exercise
  • Supplements and vitamins
  • Other lifestyle changes
