Gum Disease Treatment

Dentists have long suspected a link between oral health and total body health. Recent studies have proven this link, showing a connection between periodontal (gum) disease and an increased risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Certain cancers, including pancreatic cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Complications in controlling blood sugar levels in diabetes
  • Premature birth
  • Low birth-weight babies
  • and more

The danger is that you may have guml disease and not realize it. There often are no symptoms. Gums can recede, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay, abscesses and tooth loss - all without any bleeding or tenderness. But many people have at least minor symptoms, including:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Puffiness or tenderness of the gums
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Loose-feeling teeth

Diagnosis

During your regular cleanings and exams, our hygienist will measure the gum tissue around each tooth to determine if there is any deterioration. If periodontal disease is diagnosed, a variety of treatments are available to treat the disease. And with today's advanced treatments, this disease is not only treatable, it's even reversible.

Treatment

A variety of new technologies make the treatment of gum disease more comfortable than ever.

Laser Therapy

High-tech soft tissue lasers can gently remove any damaged or diseased gum tissue and kill any bacteria below the gum line.

WaterLase

This innovative technology uses laser-energized water to comfortably remove any bacteria or calculus under the gum line and around the tooth root, promoting health.

Home Care

Good oral hygiene is important. You should brush at least two to three times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Daily flossing, fluoride rinses and an oral irrigator also are important. These preventive measures combined with your regular treatments in our office should have your mouth restored to perfect health in no time!
