What are Actinic Keratoses?
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, such as sunlight. They can range in color from skin-toned to reddish brown, and can range in size from as small as a pin to larger than a quarter. They most often occur on the face, scalp, and ears. Because AKs devlop as a result of years of sun exposure, they generally appear after age 40.
Why Treat AKs?
AKs can be an early sign of cancer development. They have the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. Since there is no way to tell ahead of time which AKs will become cancerous, it's important for people with AKs to visit the dermatologist regularly. Frequent skin exams are the key to early detection and prevention.
How Does Boulevard Dermatology Treat AKs?
At Boulevard Dermatology, we used Levulan Kerastick + BLU-U to treat AKs effectively and conveniently. Levulan Kerastick is a topical solution that is applied to the AK. The solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to the BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells.
