Colonoscopy
An outpatient procedure that allows the gastroenterologist to view the inner lining of the large intestine in order to screen for cancer or precancerous growths in the colon or rectum. The procedure can also help to find areas of inflammation or bleeding. Abnormal growths can be removed and tissue samples (biopsies) can be collected for analysis.

Duodenoscopy
An outpatient procedure that uses a duodenoscope (long, flexible, thin tube placed inside the body) to view the beginning section of the small intestine in order to screen for growths that may be inhibiting digestion.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
An outpatient procedure performed to view the inner lining of the lower large intestine in order to evaluate causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding , or changes in bowel habits. This procedure is also used as a colon and rectal cancer screening tool in people over the age of 50.

Gastroscopy
This outpatient test is used when screening for gastric/stomach cancer and/or ulcers . During the test, the gastroenterologist examines the esophagus and stomach using a thin, lighted tube called a gastroscope, which is passed through the mouth to the stomach. The test is performed to identify abnormal areas within the stomach and extract tissue for a biopsy.

Upper Endoscopy
This outpatient test is often performed to determine the causes of heartburn, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bleeding and/or swallowing disorders. During the test, the gastroenterologist examines the upper digestive system (esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine) using a thin scope with a light and camera. An upper endoscopy can help to identify inflammation, ulcers and tumors.
