Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a prepared tooth to restore its shape,size, strength, function, and improve its appearance. Crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

Types of crowns : a) porcelain (ceramic) crowns b) gold crowns c) metal crowns (cast and pre-formed) d) plastic crowns

There are different types of “porcelain crowns”. a) porcelain fused to a non-precious metal (PFM) b) porcelain fused to gold (PFG) c) full porcelain crowns (baked) and d) full porcelain crowns (CAD-CAM). Each has its own specific recommended use.

Gold crowns are cast crowns using high noble gold metal. They are recommended for posterior area teeth where esthetics is not an issue.

Metal Crowns are cast or factory preformed crowns. They are usually used for posterior teeth where esthetic is not an issue and cost is a huge factor

Plastic crowns are either pre-formed or processed outside the mouth. They are usually used as provisional restorations or when cost is a dire issue. They are normally meant as short-lived restorations.
