Home Care

We encourage our patients to establish a specific dental home care regimen consisting of tooth and tongue brushing twice a day , morning and before going to bed and flossing at least once a day. We recommend toothbrushes with soft and round end bristles and a rounded head small enough to reach all parts of the teeth and mouth. We also recommend that they be changed every 2-3 months or when the bristles starts to fray and become out of shape. Electric toothbrushes are good to use as well particular for people who are physically challenged and can’t use a regular toothbrush. We recommend those that have capabilities to both rotate andoscillate. The use of fluoride-laden toothpaste with tarter control to help in the prevention of decay and minimize formation of plaque and calculus is also recommended.

Tooth Brushing Technique:

  • Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle where the teeth meet the gum. Press firmly and gently rock the brush back
  • Brush all surfaces of the teeth, tongue-side and cheek side. Brush all chewing surfaces vigorously with short back and forth strokes
  • Brush the tongue from back to front. This may help remove debris that can cause bad breath and help bacterial growth.
  • Occasionally use “disclosing tablets” to check if plaque still present.
