A tooth is considered impacted when there is not enough room to accommodate the tooth in the dental arch and eruption into the mouth cavity becomes impossible. After surgery to remove an impacted tooth, mild discomfort and some swelling is expected. You may use cold compresses to alleviate the swelling (20 minutes on/20 minutes off). In addition, your doctor may prescribe pain medication. Patients are also advised to favor the extraction area and modify their diet for a few days to allow for healing.
