Crowns

crown

A crown, or "cap", as it is commonly known, is a hollow artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. A crown may also be used to improve the aesthetics of a tooth.

Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. Each type of material has unique properties and advantages.

The process of placing a crown will require 2-3 visits to the dentist. On the initial visit, the tooth will be reshaped and an impression will be taken of this tooth and the surrounding teeth. From this impression, a crown of the correct shape, size and color will be fabricated. As this final crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth. In the final appointment, the permanent crown will be cemented in place.

A tooth that has been fixed with a permanent crown looks and functions very much like a natural tooth. Taking care of the crown with regular brushing and flossing will help to ensure that the crown will last a long time.
