Dentures

dentures

Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth. They are supported by the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. There are two types of conventional dentures:  complete and partial.

Complete dentures  are used when all your natural teeth are missing. They are removable and are held in place by suction. There are two types of complete dentures:

  • Conventional Full Dentures: All the teeth are removed and the tissue is given time to heal before the dentures are placed. It could take a few months for the gum tissue to heal completely, and during this time you will be without teeth.
  • Immediate Full Dentures: Prior to having your teeth removed the dentist will take impressions of your mouth and start the process of fabricating the denture. When the denture is ready, the teeth will be removed and the dentures placed immediately in your mouth. As the tissue heals under the denture, the size and shape of the tissue and bone will change. This will require a follow-up appointment so that the denture can be relined, to ensure it fits well.

Partial dentures are are also a removable prostheses. They may be used when nearby teeth are not strong enough to support a fixed bridge, or when multiple teeth are missing.

Dentures require diligent cleaning. Our staff can offer advice on how to keep your denture looking and feeling great.

It is important to note that regular appointments with a dentist are very important, whether you have a complete denture or a partial. A dentist will examine your mouth, the fit of the denture, and perform an oral cancer screening, just as he or she would if you had your natural teeth.
